Windows XP Extended Security Updates?

For those of us still using Windows XP it might be possible to continue receiving Security Updates. By using a registry hack it is possible to make your computer appear as a POS Terminal (Point of Service/Self Service Supermarket Till).

Obviously adjusting your registry is dangerous and is done at your own risk. Make an Image Backup of your hard drive first! The link below explains how.

XP Extended Security Update Hack

With all the questions about the "end" of XP and the withdrawal of security updates I thought there would have been at least some reaction to my post.

I tried out the registry modification on a test XP partition and all seems to have gone well, but if you try it yourself you do so at your own risk.

One word (well paragraph actually) of caution:-

The POS terminals will possibly not have used / needed all the functionality used by office / home users etc. Accordingly MS might only be fixing glitches relevant to the POS set-up.

Batch,

At least the security updates alone should be better than nothing. Perhaps other updates will be available using Microsoft Update as well as Windows Update?

Just had 2 updates for an old XP PC - came in on the usual auto update.

onthelimit1,

I've checked on the Windows XP Pro partition that has had the registry fix, and one that hasn't, but no new updates are available for me. Perhaps it's because I'm using XP Pro or some other difference in hardware or software loeaded.

The updates I received after the POS registry fix are shown below.

Peter,

Maybe I wasn't clear - I was referring to security updates, so just to clarify:

Accordingly MS might only be fixing SECURITY glitches relevant to the POS set-up. Other security issues that don't affect the usage on POS terminals might not get fixed - and one will probably never know.

All those excet the WEPOS ones have come through as normal

Do not install the WEPOS ones as your pro system is not a WEPOS

Is your exhortation based on known technical issues with installing WEPOS updates on non-WEPOS systems or more to do with licensing issues or even something else?

As Batch has indicated, what do you base your comments on please?
