Windows XP Activation File

  powerless 17:23 20 Apr 2003

I think i have seen this in one of PCA magazines; i'm sure of it.

It's to do with the Windows XP Activation and there is a file on your computer that is related to the Activation and that file shows that XP has been activated.

I'm not sure what this file is and where it can found but you can can use it to copy to a new installtion of XP. On the same computer obviously there is nothing illegal about it.

But i cannot seem to find this article in PCA's magazine...

Did anyone see it and more importantly where can this file be found.

Also what edidtion and page number of PCA?

The file is "Wpa.dbl" and can be found in Windows/System32

Only one I know of is C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

You can't copy it though as it will just tell you that its activated...

Thanks Paperback Writer

Thanks Chris...

I knew it wasn't a case of simply copying and pasting to System32.

I too have backed that file up and also just printed that page.

Thanks again.

Don't count your chickens....

It appears to be hit and miss at best. It looks like M$ used this system on the beta versions but have changed it so it will not work on latter releases.

I counted my chickens, actually having chicken for tea.

I decided to take a wild gamble and see what would happen if i deleted this Wpa.dbl file. So i did and Windows allowed me to delete it.

I rebooted and tried to log on and up popped a message along the lines of...

"Windows has encouterd an error in checking that this version has been activated.

Would you like to activate now?"

Well anyway i rebooted again and started in safe mode renamed the old file and copied and pasted the Wpa.dbl of the floppy into system32.

Rebooted and i could once more log on as before so in this case it seems to work.

But as to reinstalling Windows i'll try that later and put Wpa.dbl back into system32.

You is a brave man :o)

It seems the re-installing is the problem, enjoy your tea....

Well it did not work :-(

I put the file in the folder in safe mode. Then when i rebooted it asked for XP to activated so it appears you were right it does not work.
