Windows won't shut down

Since I install win xp I have to physically press and hold down my on & off button for atleast 5 seconds or more before the system shuts down. Windows shuts down but a message comes up saying "its now safe to turn off your computer" can this message be by-pass and let the computer shut down after saving all work by its own? Appreciate any support you can provide. Thank you.
