Windows Update Sticks at 3%

Running XP with Auto Updates turned on and indicator in systemtray shows 'Downloading Updates 3%'. For some reason this is where it stays (3%) and it hogs the CPU so that the machine is unusable. Have turned off Auto Updates for now.
Any ideas?

Go to the Microsoft Update site (express updates) and it should show 8 updates for XP last night.
Try downloading and installing them one by one - if nothing else you should be able to identify the problematical one.

Have you first tried turning your Router off with switch or button at the back of the router then back on after about 1 minute. this may work faster after. also try setting Updates to Manual, then you can run from the Startup list. and choose the ones you want to load under Custom install
