Windows Update site blocked

  TipX 21:43 06 Aug 2008

Since the weekend I have been unable to

i) connect to Windows Updates (diagnostics claim problem with FTP connections)

ii) connect to Live Messenger (80072efd error)

My firewall (Windows Firewall) has also now started reporting that elements of iTunes are blocked.

I run AVG Free, XP Pro SP3, and Firefox for all browsing bar windoes update which opens IE7 automatically.

I do not have access to router setting as this was supplied by work, so beleive this cannot have changed.

Please help if you can.

Disable the firewall temporarily from Control Panel/Security centre, if it helps reset the firewall to defaults and re-enable it. click here

I've tried this but no joy. Problem remains.

Anything else it could be?

I have also restored to a point previous to the problam starting but this doesn't help either.

Tried this? click here

With the caveat that it hasn't been updated for SP3, though it only registers services and a bunch of files, it doesn't actually change any files itself. Set a restore point first and give it a go.

Thanks Brundle. Tried running the relevent sets of tasks, but no change.

It had, however mysteriously re-started, after not working all day. There is a theory regarding 'load-balancing' at Microsoft?

Thanks for responding and the advice givem.
