Windows Update hides wireless adaptor

I run Vista on a Sony Vaio VGN-NS11J with an USRobotics wireless maxg router. All went well until it installed a Windows update last week, when I lost all wireless connectivity. All the usual checks produced the message that the wireless adaptor was turned off and I must turn it on. In spite of it already being on, I switched it on and off bur no result. The only way I could cure the problem was by using System Restore, thus uninstalling the update. Anybody having the same problems or aware of a solution? I would like to be able to install the update again at some stage.

Why? If it wasn't a "critical update" and it breaks your wireless connectivity, there wouldn't seem to be any merit in installing it again. There are plenty of Windows Updates that can cause more harm than good when installed in a particular PC.
