Windows update half completed - my account gone!

Hi - running windows XP and I think this was on the day earlier this week when 7 MS updates arrived automatically.

I think the machine got switched off half way through applying the updates. Now when loggin on the normal account is gone and a new user is set up. The old environment is in temp files.

This happened to me once before and doing a shutdown and restart allowed the updates to complete and all was OK.

This time it's stuck in limbo. Is there a way to force it to roll the updates back or just complete them?

have you tried safe mode or system restore?

Not yet - wanted to see if there was a way to finish or reverse the update first. I suspect a restore to 3 days ago would be the next option if this first one is not possible.
