Windows trying to find programs with Chinese names

  wildhouse 11:37 04 May 2009

Having made a few tweaks to speed up my computer, every time I log on now I keep getting messages saying Windows can't find the program (followed by Chinese characters) - this happens 4 times with different characters. I am able to bypass the messages by clicking OK but does anyone know why this is suddenly happening (I am using Windows XP?

"Having made a few tweaks to speed up my computer"

What exactly were these "tweaks"?

Hi - sorry for delay in replying. I removed AVG (as I am using Avast); I ran Prefetch but didn't make any changes, then I ran MSConfig as suggested by a knowledgable IT person at work in Diagnostic mode - however, didn't have a clue once I had done that what might need changing, so went back to MSConfig and ran it in Normal mode. Have just gone through these steps again and have noticed a couple of things in Startup with Chinese characters which I have now unticked and re-started in Selective mode. The messages have now gone. Thanks for your input.

Just to be sure, I would run a Malawarebites scan in safe mode, and also a Superantispyware scan.
