Windows sound recorder may be better in latest versions but it wasn't much good when I was trying to do what you want to do.
It you feel you are in strange territory (downloading Audacity), don't worry, it is quick, snag free and simple following the prompts.
The only snag I found with Audacity, was to get too excited when editing out needle scratches or long pauses, and forget to "Save Project" at regular intervals.
If you don't save the project regularly, Audacity may crash. Nothing too serious but unsaved stuff is lost and cuss words will follow!
At any stage you can "Export" your file as a .wav or some other formats.
