Windows restarts

I installed a Motorola modem (with 62412-51 LRT32168A-X.6 written on the chip) into a PC which was switched off but plugged into the mains which was switched on. As soon as i plugged the modem in, the PC started up. I installed the W98 drivers for it, and now when I go to Shutdown the PC shuts down but then restarts 2 seconds later. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and a different PCI slot but still get the same problem. The PC works fine without the modem.

Why would a modem cause a PC to restart?

make sure the restart option hasn't been enabled ;)

Which restart option - where?

Start - Shut Down - then you have a window with the options 'close down' 'Restart' and 'Standby'
make sure 'Shut down' is selected ;)

Oh that one - yes, Shut Down is selected there but it still restarts.

at bottom right - maybe have to disable it in there before shutting down ?? computer

The syetem maybe set up to restart in the event of an error. Right click My Computer and select Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery/Settings under System failure untick Automatically restart. You may get an error message on your next shut down which you can post here.

Fine - except that the computer has Windows 98 on it and your suggestions seem to apply to XP.

There is a WOL (wake on LAN) in the BIOS try disabling that, also check Your Power Management features in Control Panel and see if there is a feature for the modem to 'wake up' the PC.
