Windows Movie Maker 2 - PC Shutdown

I have just reloaded Windows XP using a recovery disc and my two video proggies now fail to work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled them three times now, and neither accept video from my VCR. Pinnacle Studio 7 remains inoperative in that it now fails to accept video signals at all, and Windows Movie Maker 2 only lets me get as far as clicking on "Capture from video device" whereupon the screen goes black and the PC shuts down. When it reboots (automatically) I get the message "Your computer has recovered from a serious error". It looks like some sort of conflict, but it has got me beat -any ideas out there? I am running Windows XP Home, with AMD Athlon XP2100+, and 128mb nVIDIA GeForce 4. TI4600.

Type in dxdiag.exe for the DirectX control panel and run tests. Also look in device manager for yellows. But I would guess your grahics card driver needs updating/re-installing.
