Everytime I go online I get a message that Windows Messenger wants to update itself. I don't use this, and don't really want it either. How can I stop this annoying message?

IF you want to remove it, go into add/remove programs and then the windows section.

You should be able to untick it there.

What OS do you use?

Thanks, Diodorus Siculus, for your reply. I am using XP home. Not sure I want to uninstall it (who knows, I might want it in the future), just want it to stop annoying me by demanding to be updated all the time.

If you haven't installed SP2 you can stop it as follows:

Navigate to Program Files/Messenger

Rename the folder to something like NoMessenger.

Reboot.

This will stop the thing loading- if you ever want to use it again, rename the folder back to Messenger.

If you have SP2 installed then click the Tools menu in IE and select Manage Add-ons.

Select Windows Messenger and click Disable.
