Is there a program available to remove WINDOWS Messenger (as opposed to MSN Messenger). I seem unable to get rid of it by conventional means.

Thankyou.

Removing Messenger from computers WITHOUT Service Pack 1 installed

Make sure your Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Messenger and other programs are closed before doing this.

1) Click on Start, Run
2) Type the following (or cut and paste it) into the Run line

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

3) Click on OK

Removing Messenger from computers WITH Service Pack 1 installed

1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Double click on Add or Remove Programs
3) Select Add/Remove Windows Components
4) Uncheck Windows Messenger
5) Click Next
6) Click Finish
7) Restart your computer

The following has been copied and pasted from Steve Gibson's site.

Windows Messenger Service

The first thing to understand is that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

and your point is?

Shoot the messenger DOES NOT remove Windows Messenger, infact it disables a totally different thing which is not to be confused with Windows Messenger.

Steve Gibsons Shoot the messenger disables the Net Messenger service which is used to send messages between networked systems. It is NOT windows messenger. The reason this utility is on his website is some people miss use it and send offensive spam notes.

Windows messenger is a program built into windows for instant messaging, which is totally different, and is not disabled by Steve Gibsons shoot the messenger.

You can remove windows messenger in Add/Remove system components.

Shoot the Messenger stops the Windows Messenger Service running, it won't stop Windows Messenger- they're two different things.
