Windows LiveMail messahe downloads never complete & sign off

I use Windows LiveMail with the 64-bit version of Windows 7. I have no problem in downloading my messages, but after the last message has been downloaded, Windows comes up with an error messages to the effect that my POP3 server at Plusnet has not responded in 30 seconds (or whatever time I set in Windows LiveMail) and do I wish to wait or stop the process?

If I stop the process, but leave Windows LiveMail running, further messages 'landing' at Plusnet are downloaded to me automatically without the error message appearing.

How do I get LiveMail to complete the initial download process correctly & 'sign off' from the process after the last message has been sent to me?

All ideas welcome!

Thanks
