Windows Live Messenger and HP Webcam

I have an HP tx1138ea running Vista Home. The laptop has a built in vmicro webcam. From time to time the web cam will not work and gives error msg "this graph cannot be displayed". Similarly when using Live Messenger the response is "Your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again". I have checked the MS KnowledgeBase and the repsonse is that the camera must be in use by another programme, whic I believe not to be the case. I have updated the camera drivers and I have removed and reloaded Vista. Any help would be welcomed as I am completely at a loss on where to go next.thx
