Recently when trying to install software I keep getting an error message in windows installer that says "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package." I have done a virus scan using up to date defenition files and it doesnt find anything. How do I fix this error?

Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
On the shortcut menu, click Manage.
In the left pane of the Computer Management window, click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
In the right pane, scroll down to Windows Installer, and then right-click Windows Installer.
On the shortcut menu, click Start.
or set it to manual if disabled

also try

In the Start Menu select Run, type cmd, and then at the prompt type msiexec /regserver

and look at Windows Installer Cannot Be Found, similar to your problem

if the above doesn't work, then maybe you should do the following

open documents/tools/folder options/filetypes/

scroll down to the windows installer extension, which should be windows installer package (msi)

and click advanced, you should be presented with 3 different actions

install

uninstall

repair

and confirm open after download should be ticked

click on install and then click edit ,the action should be &Install

application used to perform action, "C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "%1" %*

use dde should be ticked, click ok to get out of that, now click uninstall, and edit, the action should be &Uninstall

application used to perform

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe" /x "%1" %*

and use dde ticked

click ok

click repair

action should be Re&pair

application used to perform

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe" /f "%1" %*

and use dde ticked click ok and apply if you made those changes..
