I have a new WinVista HomePremium desktop & I'm determined not to load it up with surplus third party software. On that basis is Windows Firewall enough for the job? On my old PC I have used Norton & Webroot to date. Norton is just bloated & Webroot takes an age to load at boot up.

That said I'm open to suggestions of free security suites as there is no anti-virus installed.

You will be ok with the Vista firewall but download an antivirus as a matter of urgency,i would recommend Avast free edition.

Agee with tullie.Vista firewall is enough although if you have a router that will have it's own firewall as extra security.
Avast is recommended as the top free anti virus software,so full marks again to tullie.

Don't forget an anti spyware programme though.

If you are with Barclays Bank you get Kaspersky free.
Apart from that the ones that know recommend Avast Anti-Virus.
I would the add .Malwarebytes [free or trial] and A Squared free.

Maybe add WOT for finding bad sites when you are browsing. And Spywareblaster.

That will get you started and I am sure there will be a couple of more things that can be added later.
