windows explorer shortcut error message

When right clicking a desktop shortcut in Windows XP an error message appears 'windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close' this only happens in user accounts and not the administrator account. I have run a virus scan using a fully up to date Norton anti-virus program, done system troubleshooting and also done and undone a system restore...all to no avail. I can still access outlook express, internet explorer and others by single left clicking twice. This only began at about mid day today (2nd Jan)after opening an e-mail attachment from a known and trusted source. Has anyone encountered this before and can anybody help me please.
