Windows explorer is not responding

My Toshiba laptop(Vista)about 3yrs old, as started to freeze with the following message "Windows explorer is not responding" and as to be restarted. It use to happen very occasionally, but is now happening more often. I have all windows updates,use,ccleaner,superantispyware and malwarebytes.
Suggestions as what to try please.

Try going to Internet Options> Advanced and press the Reset button. This will take it back to default settings.

the "Windows Explorer" problem occurs even when not on line (I think).
Anyway I've reset as you suggested,so see how it goes.

I have to apologise I misread Windows explorer for Internet Explorer. I'm afraid I was very little help with that.
The only thing I could suggest for windows explorer is to run a system file scan which will check for any missing or corrupt files.

Which version IE? if you are still using IE7 update to IE8
