windows explorer crashing

I've got a very strange problem with my pc, before reinstalling xp it windows explorer crashed randomly and restarted my computer randomly. I did a reinstall with a ntfs quick format, and after the reinstall I try and install programmes but don't get far before it either crashes windows explorer or restarts the computer. Sometimes explorer would repeatedly crash and I don't know why, seeing as it is a fresh install.

I was thinking it might be a hard drive problem so i'm running chkdsk now. Has anyone run into a similar problem before?

Thanks for any help

Explorer is really the core of Windows and so a report that it has crashed is only telling you that Windows has crashed. I think it's most likely that there is a problem with the computer RAM. If your RAM is in more than one stick, try with just one of them to see if that makes the computer more stable.

thanks for the reply, after the chkdsk process was complete, it restarted and now seems to be stable with no errors or anything.

Hopefully it will stay this way.
