Windows 98 will not boot

  Carpigiani 12:57 08 Jan 2005

Hello all. Sorry for the length of this thread, but lots to explain.
A friend has a problem with his Windows 98SE system. It will not boot into Windows.
Some time ago he uninstalled AntiVir PE & inatalled Norton AV. Since then on boot up he has a VXD error 'Exception 06 has occurred at 0028:00000017 in VxD_ _ _
Called from 0028:C187B487 in VxD _ _ _' He could then press enter & windows would load normally.
Recently he downloaded & installed Windows Media Player 7.1. Since then he has not been able to get into windows. Luckily he can get into 'Safe Mode'.He has tried restoring to an earlier date using a command promt, tried selective start up through msconfig & tried different boot options as suggested on the Microsoft support site.
Also tried the fix option.
He is now getting Fatal exeption OE occured @ 015F:0000663D.
Any ideas gratefully received. Please understand if I am slow to respond to any suggestions as I am trying to help him over the phone. He lives 180 miles away. Thanks.

When you say "He has tried restoring to an earlier date using a command promt" do you mean scanreg /restore? Have you tried a clean boot? click here

If all else fails and you think it is a software issue you could just shove 98 over the top of itself.

Have you tried re-bootng from the win98 startup disk, re-installing win 98 on top of the existing one. this should 'repair' and reset your variables to the win 98 system. The chances are he has accidently deleted a shared file when he un-installed antivirus PE, causing this problem.
You could also suggest a registry cleaner (many available free from web)to clear out the old resistry fils

go into safe mode mode

click start>shutdown and then click on restart in ms-dos

Thanks for the quick response.
Yes it was scanreg /restore. He has already tried clearing the check boxes as suggested.
Unfortunately he has no Windows Disk to install over the top.

He is not at his computer at the moment.

madboy33©® Will get him to try scanreg/fix (are there any spaces) ie scanreg /fix

Terry Brown will ask if he can find any recovery disks.

Will report back later.
