Windows 98 update - screen resolution problem

I have two old PC's that have Windows 98 installed and wished to give it to a beginner. I hauled one out of retirement and found that it displayed a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 and many, many colours. I went to the Windows update site and downloaded all critical updates including SP1. Subsequently I am now only able to obtain a screen resolution of 640 x 480 and 16 colours. I thought it might be a problem with the graphics card and took the hard disk out and inserted into the other old PC which is almost identical. Still have the same problem of screen resolution and colours.

Got any ideas anyone?

that the problem is an out-dated graphics driver. Download an updated driver for your card or motherbooard graphics chips and you should see things get back to normal.
