Windows 98 computer crashes during startup

  Tim 09:44 28 Mar 2009

I have an old computer which runs Windows 98SE.

It has recently started crashing part way during startup and then doing a "power fail reset". It then restarts in Safe Mode.

The problem appears to be related to my Norton Virus program. If I start up in a step by step process when it wants to default to safe mode and then prevent the following file from being run - SYMTDI.VXD - it starts up OK.

Anyone any idea?

P.S. Something that puzzles me is that I have had this before several times and it was then fixed for a while by performing a disk scan and defragmentation.

Uninstall Norton. See if the PC boots after that.
It's a resource hog and you could use a free alternative such as Avast or AVG.

For a Win98 PC ditch Norton but use the proper removal tool click here and Use Avast click here

Thanks for that. I was thinking that it would be best to replace Norton. I have now replaced Norton with Avast and my computer appears to be running OK.

What would you recommend me use as a firewall as Avast does not appear to have one?
