hi...first time for me...my bro defraged his pc ..not knowing his girlfriend had put stuff into the bin. Know when he starts up..theres nothing. Is it poss to get it back without a windows cd?

Restart, keep tapping the F8 key. A startup menu should appear. Select MS-DOS mode. At the > prompt type

scanreg /restore

and press Enter. Choose a date when all was working.

If F8 doesn't work it may be that the "Safe Mode"menu is accessed by pressing the control key during boot up.

As VOG has said but type scanreg/fix

It will not work like that in DOS I have tried that in the past on my 98se comp at DOS prompt type so it looks like this

C:\>CD Windows Press Enter then at C:\WINDOWS> type as follows

C:\WINDOWS>CD COMMAND\SCANREG /RESTORE press enter

PS if it works choose a old date before the problem

woodchip it does work in DOS

Dont put a space in between the switch though

  woodchip 18:37 11 Jan 2006

Yes but not direct from the DOS prompt when using F8. If you can get into windows to shut down to DOS then you can just type Scanreg /Restore and it will work. It will not work in safe mode ether as it does not shut down to DOS in Safe Mode. You are talking to some one who swears by 98se

If above does n't work then it sounds to me like girlfriend has deleted some system files which will only be able to be restored from install cd

Ah sorry thought you meant direct from shutdown>restart in ms-dos
