Windows 98 and 2000MHz. A good idea or not?

  myphrill 18:21 24 Dec 2004

This PC didnt come with Windows XP on a disc, nor is part of the hard drive partitioned for it. So i may install Windows 98 on it after i format the hard drive. (i wont use this pc, its just for my sister to use and she only wants the internet)

But my reliable friend said Windows 98 wouldnt work well with a 2GHz processor and that i'd get blue screen crashes once a week or so.

Whats everyone else opinion on Win98 running on a 2GHz Pentium 4 with a 40GB HDD

I have never heard that there was an issue running 98 on such a machine.

I know many people who are doing so on this and faster machines as they are happy with this O/S and do not want to upgarde.

really? thats quite reassuring. my friend also said Win98 couldnt detect large hard drives (or not 100% of them) but mines only 40GB.

No issue that I can see with either the processor speed or HDD size. This one as a 40 GB drive and started off with Windows 98.

Would you say Windows 98 is still even though 7yrs old in 2005, a good O/S to use?

Some people swear by it. I prefer XP.

  myphrill 18:42 24 Dec 2004

XP.....the way my friend talks about it, he makes out its only worth getting if you buy Professional.

thanks VoG, my friend did say Home is like Professional except on home, a few security features that Professional has are always turned off.
