Windows 7 backup

My external HDD (officially 120GB) shows 110GB space after deleting everything on it. I attempted a backup using the Win 7 facility. The backup stopped when there was still 61.39GB free on the and the backup size had reached 43.54GB, with the message "disk...doesn't have enough free space. But the used space on my C drive is only 89GB, so surely it ought to fit on my external HDD? I repeated the procedure and got the same situation. Any advice, please, on what the problem is?

This is a pure guess.

Could it be that the disk space required has to be mych greater than the files being copied to it. Does the backup create temp files for some reason and these are taking up a lot of the available space. As I said, a pure guess and there will be people, far more knowledgable than myself answering your query.

Thanks, Chas49, but my PC is new and I've checked for hidden junk. As expected, I haven't had time to accumulate it! So I'm still in the same quandary.
