I am informed on my Vista PC that a 344 mb update is available, but every time I try to download it,it fails at about 19%.Why?

  prince midas 12:45 30 May 2009

The update is for Service Pack 2 & it as failed again at 19%

  crosstrainer 12:49 30 May 2009

First thing first:

1) The service pack downloads on a "chunking" basis) This can take some time over a slow connection, or slow hdd)

2) WAIT, for at least an hour until you click "Cancel" in frustration.

3) Disable ALL active antivirus / antispyware prior to the download.

If this fails, post back.

I had the same problem when downloading the update on my wife's PC via a wireless Internet connection. As crosstrainer has already said, leave the update running and give it time to fully download. I went off and had lunch and when I came back it was ready to install.

...And should have mentioned:

When It states "DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PC"

Don't.

Go to the pub
Into the garden.....Anything, but don't turn off!

My problem is that after about 5 mins my download switches of with the message Download failed and it is usually about 19 percent downloaded. My connection is very fast.It says code 8007000l error, windows update encpountered uknown error.
It will not even finish the download and says download failed.

It also asks me through a window To Start Again and then fails time after time.

Sounds as if you may be infected.

Download, update and run these free tools:

When installed, update and run each in turn (yes, it takes a while) then post back with results.

When I had IE8 on my XP PRO SP3 PC I had similar problems trying to download and install updates. Maybe Vista has similar problems. I simply uninstalled IE8.
