Win98se problems

  NotsoNewuser 17:33 12 Apr 2009

My win98 pc would not shut down, so I went to ms site and followed the instructions.
I now have a very enlarged desktop which I cannot change as I cannot get the "apply" button to show in the Properties box.
Any one got any ideas before I have to use a restore disc?

i think when that happened i used to use the tab button and the enter to click apply but i had to guess that it was apply i was hitting.

Dunno if it works in 98, but try F11. That removes the top and bottom of the screen.

Try the nearest that W98 would offer by way of restoration.

Start button >
Type in the box " scanreg /restore "
(with a space between scanreg and /

You will have a choice of the last 5 dates that Windows booted properly.
Choose one before the current trouble if you can and press Enter

Follow the prompts and let it sort itself.

Thanks for your help everyone. It was the scanreg/restore that worked.

scanreg /restore saved me on many an occasion...:-)

Actually I increased the number of backups at the time from the default of five to 10.

Use the 'scanreg.ini' utility in C:\windows\scanreg.ini

Open scanreg.ini and look for the line MaxBackupCopies=5 or whatever number is listed and change it to the required Default value.
