Win98 Clients freeze when logging to NT4domain

Hi Network experts, I have been puzzled as to what could cause the problem we are facing at our LAN. Windows 98SE Workstations take a long time to log on to the domain (WinNT4 server based)and some of them completely freeze. we are using config.pol to set all the desktops and programs for group of users. This problem have not been there all the time and it seems to affect more of a larger no of users of the one group. We traced our steps as to what changed on the network but could not think of an obvious reason. we have a back bone of 1GB switch and fibre optics to feed other 4 channels. we checked the scripts batch files that run at startup and we checked all the setting in config.pol but still no joy, could the real time scan of Norton Anti Virus corprate edition version 9.0 be the problem? I could do with some help here, would be much appreciated. Thank you.
