Win7 Networking

Ok - got a desktop and a laptop, got Win 7 ultimate on both machines.

Do not see each other on network - going daft - no hair left.

Is there an idiots guide somewhere - thought i was pc literate - could waltz around older versions but now MS is handholding having problems.

When trying to see laptop from desktop it asks for user Id and password - but I have not set any!!!!
How do I find this info out?

Thanks in great anticipation of getting an answer to this issue

thanks John,

Hoping to work through the options later

Ok now I am really flummoxed.

Started again - created homegroup on desktop. Noted password.
Turned on laptop, did not give choice of joing a workgroup so I thought OK and created homegroup on laptop. Noted password.

Desktop now asks if I want to join the other homegroup - OK - put in laptop password and great desktop now sees laptop and I can use files on it

laptop says no other computers are in the homegroup, yet the desktop is looking at it and showing all directories.

Totally p'd off with WIn 7 now, should be easier than this.

Like I said earlier versions I could set up a works network with ease but this !!!!!!

thanks for looking, and if you can help, it would be greatly appreciated
