Win XP Pro ? installing first time

I am intending to change from 98SE to XP. During the clean install routine, I?m told that I should opt for NTFS format, OK?
My HDD is split 50/50; C has the system & applications; D holds the work/data. If I go for NTFS, does the whole drive have to be reformatted or just C: and if it is just C, should I reconfigure D also?
Supplementary question? Before starting the fun I shall back up using 98?s back-up system. Are these back-ups compatible with XP?s back-up system (assuming it has one, ME didn?t, did it?).

You can format partition C: as NTFS by itself, when you get the OS up and running, you can transfer all your work and files from D: to C:, and reformat D: as NTFS afterwards within windows XP.

I don't think theres much point in backing up in 98 becuase once the partition is reformatted, everything is wiped out including the backups.

Just make sure all you important files are kept in partition D: or on removable media. That way, you won't lose much if things go wrong.
