Win XP not loading - winsrv missing

  Guady 13:34 14 Feb 2007

I am trying to help my neighbour with a problem and hope someone out there can assist. Her computer was "hijacked" by some sort of Porn / spyware item. Every time she went into IE a site showing porn appeared. I thought it would help if I put all the pages into the Prohibited Sites area in Options. However, on next trying to start the PC, we got the blue screen and a message that we had Error C0000135 and that winsrv was missing. We now can't get WinXP to open at all and I really don't know what to try, as obviously we can't Virus check or anything. Please help. Her PC is old but she is trying to keep going with it, as she can't afford a new one at present. Any suggestions would help!

Hi, can you start the pc in Safe mode ... keep pressing F8 on startup - if you can get it started in safe mode you could then try a System Restore back to a date before the problem arose.

Thanks for your replies - I have been round and tried all the options in the F8 screen - including Go To Last Time Worked Correctly (or similar!) but nothing helps! She can't find her Windows CD and I really have no idea what to try next.

Any XP CD will work as long as same system ie. HOme or PRO.

You could use your CD to effect a repair.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing systm

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Thanks for the suggestion of using my XP CD but I have a different version - so I don't think it will work. I have looked to see if I can find on my PC the file Winsvr as I thought I might be able to use the Recovery Console (which I've put on a CD) to get in before Windows tries to load - but I can't find the file WINSVR anywhere. Does anyone know where I might find a copy?
