Win media player problem

Recently for first time downloaded numerous audio cds into WMP. On playing direct from cd and from WMP library sound is distorted when music gets 'beefy'. All play ok on domestic cd player. I have tried as far as I know all possible adjustments to sound properties in equalizer, recording levels, speaker tests ( 5.1.) Tried on just stereo.
Tried downloading into Real One and towards end of first cd it said 'your cd player cannot record digital cds'!! And the cd drive was only generic ie standard. It offered another drive which I think I downloaded, but it only took 18 secs. It didn't make any difference. Also tried using the dvd drive ,but same result. Cd player copes with programme downloads no problem. Game sounds are perfect in 5.1 at full volume.(or nearly full!)
Using Watford perfecta pro Pentium 4. With AC97.
6 months old. Does this sound like a warranty job? Any suggestions please. Muddypaws.

Probably a bit unfair on WMP as it's likely to be a PC problem. Muddypaws
