Win Me; New 80GB Drive; <16KB cluster size?

  BigDunc 13:45 10 Mar 2003

Just installed a new replacement 80GB HD, partitioned 25/25/30GB. The cluster size is 16kb on the C drive and there wasn't an option to have a different size it when it was being partitioned and formated. Is this the minimum cluster size available for a Fat 32 drive of this size?

I have Partition Magic v4 but believe that it doesn't work with ME??

I think that fat32 has a 16kb cluster size... but wait for someone who knows to confirm that.

0-8gb=cluster size 4kb

8-16gb=cluster size 8kb

16-32gb=cluster size 16kb

32+=cluster size 32kb

That is the default cluster size for that size partition - see click here

Thanks folks

And my "understanding" is that NTFS is not an option unless I use Win 2000 or XP. Don't suppose it really matters what the cluster size is on my 80GB disk! Was curious since on my previous HD, the cluster size was 4k. (As it WOULD be with the above info!!!!)

Best wishes

Your understanding is correct re NTFS.

Cluster size only really becomes an issue[in terms of wasting space]if you've got loads of small files on a large partition as each one even if only 4kb will take up the minimum default cluster size.[eg a 4kb file would take up 32kb,a 34kb file would take up 64kb].
