Oh, and run a scandisk to check there are no disk problems.

Win98 Defrag works about 10 times quicker if the Defrag.exe file from Windows ME is exchanged for the original defrag.exe file in Win 98.
Enter "Defrag.exe for Win ME" into Google.
First download the Defrag.exe file for Win ME and store in separate folder.
Now, in Win 98, go to the Defrag.exe file in C:\Windows and rename to DefragOLD.exe.
Now copy the Windows ME Defrag.exe file into C:\Windows and restart computer.
Now try Defrag.

The ME version of Scandisk is better too, good tip.
