Win 98 boot up failure

Each time i boot up my machine it say boot failure insert boot disk i have inserted the boot disk and it goes to the dos prompt but i cannot read my hard drive or cd drive my specs are pentium 3 12gb hard drive cd drive 32mb graphics card intel motherboard if anyone can please help me fix this problem?

i also cannot reinstall win98 cheers

Your hard drive may have failed or become corrupted. Try repairing the Master Boot Record by booting with the floppy and at the A:\> prompt typing "fdisk /mbr" (without quotes) and pressing Enter.

Also, try replacing the system files from the same A:\> prompt by typing "sys c:" (without quotes) and pressing Enter.

As you can read neither hdd nor CD, it may be that the ide channel has failed. Are they one channel? If so, try putting them onto the other if possible.

Has the PC been moved? There may have been a dislodgement of cables - check they are all securely in place.

Otherwise, it could be a damaged hdd as suggested above.

At the command prompt how did you check the C Drive
