Will XP run on this?

  pj123 14:27 29 Jan 2007

My friend wants to upgrade from W98SE to XP.

His PC, from what I can remember, is a PCChips Motherboard with a Duron 1300 CPU and 512mb Memory.

He has an 80gb hard drive as master and a 120gb hard drive as slave. Also a DVD RW drive and a DVD Rom drive.

What are his chances, will it run XP or not?

Hi pj123, I think it will run. You could look up the minimum spec required from Microsoft.

Probably, but slow
What chances of more memory?
However looking at the costs of basic computers with oem xp and bearing in mind the age of the existing system I'd go for new, even if it meant saving up for a couple of months
At the end of the day that route is probably not all that much more expensive

It will run ok

I run XP on an Athlon 1.2 with 512mb

Yes... XP should quite easily run on that computer.
However, once your friend installs their Anti-Virus, FireWall, Office, etc... the system will get abit slow.

As long as he/she doesn't use the computer for games, it shouldn't really bother them

Easily, my sis runs XP on a Duron 700 with 512mb, turn off un-necessary services, switch off the graphic effects, use a low-overhead AV like Avast, it'll work fine.

961, more memory is a step in the right direction but the mobo takes PC133 SDRAM (at the moment 512mb is priced at £60 as opposed to 512mb DDR memory at £45)

Thanks, Fruit Bat /\0/\, will tell him that.

mattyc_92, no he isn't a gamer so he should be OK.

Will tell him all this and let him make up his own mind.

Thanks all.

PC Chips, well thats a maker from the past!

I use to have a Celeron 400MHz and then a PentiumIII 550MHz Slot1 when I first switched to XP Pro.

Did everything required.
