Will MSE keep working, or should i get a diff antivirus...

Hi there,

I can't afford an upgrade from my Win XP (which i have running on my Acer Aspire laptop). I have been using microsoft security essentials. Will MSE keep working after April 8th, or should i get a different antivirus program, such as AVG free? (I've read that it's not good to have more than one running antivirus program, so that i should choose one.) Also, what are some good options for an antispyware and a firewall?

I am also wondering, if a friend buys a Windows 7 or 8 upgrade disk for his Windows XP computer, will it include the ability for him to use it on a second PC? (Eg., if one is generally allowed for one's home desktop, and a second time for one's portable laptop...)

thanks so much for any help or ideas!!!

MSE is not linked to XP so will keep working but it is not very good and latest reviews don't rate it all. I would uninstall MSE and install Avast or AVG (free versions).

Upgrade depends on the licence which is normally for one pc only.

As Woolwell has said: it won't stop working - but Microsoft themselves have admitted that MSE isn't very good. I use Avast (free) and find it perfectly good. I don't use anti-spyware or a firewall (I rely on my router) so can't make any recommendations there. And I think Woolwell is right: 'normally', a Windows licence allows you to install on only one hardware platform.

I have just received and installed a Microsoft automatic update for MSE. A few minutes later, I got a pop-up message to say that MSE will not be supported from April 8th. This just adds to the advice previously given - get rid of MSE!
