hello all,i have a msi kt4l mobo,it is about 18 months old.will it accept a sempron cpu without a bios flash i have a xp cpu in it now and could do it as i have live update but i am a bit scared to be honest.and if i dont need to then i dont want to.i dont care if it recognises it as an xp as long as it will still run it as it should.thanks,peter.

How fast is your Athlon XP? If you have one of the faster ones there would be little point in swapping it for a Sempron.

i am putting my xp2500+ in a new motherboard so am buying cheap cpu for the kids to use so that is why i need to know.

suspect you may need to upgrade the bios, but if the speed is set yuo should be ok, just have the pc showing it as a xp or duron.

Semprons have a higher 333Mhz fsb than Athlons 266Mhz, so I don't think an 18 month old board is likely to work properly without a BIOS update. Check the MOBO manual I could be wrong.

If you are taking out a 2500+, then you board does run at 333fsb. The 2500+ is a barton running at 1.83 ghz i.e. 11 X 166.With 512 cache.

What size sempron are you thinking of putting in?

there is no problem with the fsb.i just wanted to know if it would work without a bios flash.please dont take offence at this but i fully understand fsb settings,in fact i am aware of the technical settings 166/333 i know it has a locked multiplier set at 9 i know it will work on my kt4 what i dont know is.will it need a bios flash?i am also aware that my 2500+ has a L2 512 cach and that the sempron that i want is 256 ([email protected])

There does seem to be a BIOS upgrade to enable Semperon use.

thanks i know that there is a bios update available and that it will then show it as what it is ie a sempron 2200.what i want to know is will it work without the flash,i dont mind if is shows it as a duron or xp as long as it works.i thought someone might have upgraded their cpu to a sempron but i guess not.

I would try the MSI user community forum click here someone there may have the answer

I have flashed the bios on both my amd boards - no problems at all as long as you make sure you have the right file for your board and you follow the instructions - I think I used live update to find the correct bios files.
