Wifi wont work if secured

my friend has wifi and when ever he tries to put a pasword on he cant get onto it on his laptop. his other laptop works with wep or wpa on but his other laptop wont connect if i put a password on for him.

Woodchip had a very similar issue and i think it turned out to be the wireless card was not compatible,changing to a usb dongle cured this.
Im pretty sure this was the problem but maybe corrected.

You are using the same encryption key that is set within the router settings ?

i have made sure all te settings are the same on the one that doesnt work and the one that does

before we re installed xp it was working so i dont no what has happend.

What does device manager say beside Network adaptors ? any exclaimation marks ?

Ross what make a model wireless card,possible driver needed.
You mentioned reinstalled xp,is this sp2 if not,have downloaded the sp2 package.
