Wifi speed dropping off

I recently bought a Hecules G PCMCIA Wifi Card, for my Equium laptop. It seems to work ok but whenever I try to take steaming material I notice that the speed drops right off. For the record I'm on 512k ADSL and usually I stream at around 222kbps. I tested the line speed today and it was around 490kbps. I started streaming at 238kbps (the norm for me) but it dropped to 128, then 88 and finally 48kbps. It fluctuated up and down from time to time but mainly stayed around 88kbps. When I connect to the modem via the ethernet connection, everything works fine (speed around 238kbps)
The card speed is suppose to be up to 54Mbps. Can anyone tell me why the stream rate drops off? Thanks

Im not sure about wifi as i dont use it,but have you encrypted the line so no1 can piggy back the connection, and steal your bandwith.
