My new laptop has two partitions

1 for the OS and one for my data

On my c drive i have little or no perosnal files on it. Yet it has over 30gb worth of files on it. With only around 5 gb free.

Why is this so large?

It is probably the system restore points. You can right click on drive properties and select clean up. Vista shouldn't take more that 15-20Gb.
I would leave at least one system restore point though.

Assuming its Vista then you can extend your C drive from disk management. From stsrt right click Computer, click mansge then select disk management, right click on the partition and select extend volume.
