.
An excellent article showing how a cheap "500Watt" PSU was in reality a cheap 250W unprotected piece of rubbish.

"Our generic 500 W power supply died when we tried pulling 275 W from it".
That sentence says it all really.
Upgrading my GPU,so am going to need a new PSU.
Already decided to go for a branded one,but i certainly learnt something new from that article.
Even if a generic PSU can deliver the power, other things such as clean power and high noise can cause pc's to freeze and reboot.
Great,informative article.(O:!

i found the key to keeping my pc as quiet as possible, is get the biggest branded dual 120 fan psu, with fan control and use heatpipe cpu and gpu cooling. mine is ocz, but most brands have fan control, it's a seperate low current circuit which you plug all the case fans into, i have 2 120mm at the rear and one at the front, the back of the psu has a heat sensor which controls the fan speeds. i have an amd 6400 x2 clocked at 3.5gz and and overclocked 8800gtx (with hr-03 cooler) neither the cpu or the gpu have fans fitted after hours of gaming the temps remain:
cpu48c gpu 72c, motherboard 42c, these temps are roughly halved on idle and the tower is whisper quiet.

sounds a good psu which one is it?

quality psu's have the 80% plus logo, these save on electricity so even though they cost more you get the money back over time.

Just to Add to the above, be aware of cheap system cases that have cheap PSU's

IT DOES NOT PAY

don't know! game extreme i think, got it from e buyer over a year ago ocz are pretty cheap, not sure if it's a good name, mine hasnt missed a beat in 12 months though, however it's 850 watts and very underloaded, only got it to run the 8800gtx, like a lot of people in 6/12 months now the g90 cards are out, i could downgrade it to a 500 watt. the 8800 g80 cards will soon be out of date and 1300 watt psu's like click here will just not be needed i fear!

  mrwoowoo 19:37 17 Mar 2008

Will the g90 cards require less watts to run then?
