Why is explorer.exe working overtime ??

Hi guys,
For some unknown reason my pc has suddenly started to run very slowly. When i check in windows task manager it shows that most of the cpu usage is being used by explorer.exe. I have run Norton Antivirus, Spybot,Adware, and xoftspy to try and find a "nasty" of some kind but the problem is still there .

Can anyone suggest the next step

Many Thanks in advance

Schmitt

Running :-
windows xp sp2
amd athlon 2200xp
768mb ram

try running your anti-virus etc in safe mode also turn off system restore first then back on afterwards you will lose all your restore points but can manually create one when you have finished

I've also noticed that Task.exe is also working like crazy. The cpu usage appears to be swap from one to the other.

Thanks for the advice -- i have already run Norton in safe mode albeit with the system restore still on. Will this make a difference ?
I did notice that it took far longer than usual to do its check while running in safe mode.

Cheers
