Q1...above?

Q2. My friend has been given a new mouse, the connection on the mouse is 6 pin mini DIN, but he needs to use an adapter to connect it to a nine pin serial port, but it does not work...why?

To use a mouse in dos you have to load dos drivers, these come with the mouse normally. And have to be loaded from a dos prompt

PS some mice do not have them as not many use Dos now day's. They should be on a floppy disc

Only one file is required Mouse.com and can be loaded automatically from your autoexec.bat file.

Q2 - For a PS/2 (mini-din) mouse to work via a 9 pin serial adapter, it must be built that way in the first place. Not many of them are - that's why you can get either a Serial mouse, a PS/2 mouse, or a PS/2-Serial mouse (which usually comes with the adapter).
