Why does iexplore.exe make my CPU run at 100%?

Hello
Suddenly my desktop has stared to freeze up. No response froim anything for regualr and long periods of time at a go.

Ctrl, Alt, Del shows me that most of the CPU usage (like 97%) is down to iexplore.exe and CPU is ruuning at 100%.

Now, granted, I only have an AMD Athlon XP 1600Mhz, but this hasn't been a problem before and no significant software has been added recently.

I regularly run AdAware and CCleaner and AVG. Any ideas please?

Many thanks,

Does this happen all the time (e.g. with any web pages / sites) or only with specific web pages / sites?

I found that the animated ads on many sites are enough to use all available CPU and then some (esp. as at the time, until a few months ago, I had an Athlon 1100).

I solved this by locating the domains for ad servers that the various web sites use and added these to my hosts file. E.g.:

127.0.0.1 spe.atdmt.com
127.0.0.1 ads.bloomberg.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.zanox.com
127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de
127.0.0.1 socratos.forrestersurveys.com
127.0.0.1 ads.contextual.ad-flow.com
127.0.0.1 ll.atdmt.com
127.0.0.1 m1.2mdn.net
127.0.0.1 ads.newsquest.co.uk
127.0.0.1 utarget.co.uk
127.0.0.1 wp.korelab.com
127.0.0.1 balloon.korelab.com

The hosts file is usually found at (at least under XP): C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

The 127.0.0.1 is the IP address that points back to one's own machiine (called often loopback or localhost). The entries above mean that IE looks for the sites concerned on your machine and, failing to find them, basically just ignores them and carries on.

Try switching off Automatic updates briefly....does the machine still freeze ?
