Why do i have this space???

I admit to not knowing much about computers so im hoping logging onto this forum can help me out a little.

When looking at my "disk management" im quite confused at what i see.

along the top it says:

volume: C:
Layout: partition
Type: Basic
File System: FAT32
Status: Healthy
Capacity 7.83GB
Free Space: 2.27GB
% Free: 28%

At the bottom i see:

Disk 0 Primary Partiton Unallocated
Basic (C:)
38.28GB 7.84GB FAT32 30.43GB
Online Healthy (System) Unallocated

What confuses me is why to i have so much disk unallocated. 30.43GB - when at the top it says i have 2.27GB free space.
Im under the impression that i have a 40GB hard drive and neither of these values equal that.

its a bit jumbled above.

should read this.

Along the left hand side i see:

Disk 0, Basic, 38.28GB, Online

Next to that i see:

Primary partiton, (C:), 7.84GB FAT32, Healthy(system)

And last in the line i see:

Unallocated, 30.43GB, Unallocated.

What you have is a partitioned hard drive, but you are just using the first partition ( 7.83 gig )

So when you look in my computer you should just have the small C drive visible. Enable the partition ( the 30.43 gig one ). You do this by;

Right clicking on the unallocated space and you will get one of two options

1) to initialise the drive, if this comes up then pick yes and follow the prompts

2) To format the drive ( it will have a drop down box to pick either NTFS or fat32 filing system)

This should get the extra hard drive space you have up and running.

Best of luck.
