Why can't I start in safe mode?

  Rhuddlan 18:28 11 Dec 2003

I have a packard bell i design 170+ with win xp home, and during startup before and after the packard bell logo appears, I keep pressing F8 but all I get is the boot devices, floppy 1st boot device, IDE-0 second boot device etc, anyone shed some light on the problem?

You should have a "startup" option underneath? if not from run type msconfig and under boot.ini tick "/safeboot"

You will have to untick the box when you have done your thing.

Jester2K II had a similar prob with a Packard Bell he got in using " F5 " .

F5 is a generic straight through safe mode option

As soon as the PC beeps start tapping F5.

Whats the difference between the F5 and F8 route?

Thanks F5 worked, thanks again everyone for the help, and a Merry Christmas to everyone.

F5 will take you direct to safemode and not offer the menu option.

Actually thats not quite true, it used to but the "carry on" has filtered through to XP (even though you get the menu)
