What make and model of wireless router do you have?

You can try changing the wifi channel. The range depends on the construction of the house eg what is between the router and your laptop.

I have a Samsung netbook - that had very poor wireless performance. Changing the (as fitted) Atheros card for a Broadcomm one transformed it (10 quid from ebay).

I am in a 30s semi-D with brick in-fill walls.

Thomson 585v6 (AOL supplied) 'G' Router in the front room (badly placed with radiator between it and rest of ground floor)

It works past the dining room, out into the Conservatory (aerial must stay vertical) and just onto the patio.

I was quite surprised. Speed drops a bit (20MBs).

Compaq laptop Atheros 'n' built-in. (mini PCIe card)
