white screen monitor problem

I have just purchased a brand new 22" monitor---when I set it up all looked well and my desktop was a riot of coloured icons. However, I was called out on an emergency and when I returned half an hour later my screen had gone white. I rebooted but still got white screen.
I changed to an old monitor and everything was fine. My graphics card is a 4 year old STB nVIDIA TNT delivering 128 bit power with 16 MB.

Is the card the problem? or the monitor?
Why did everything work initially?

My monitor does this about every other day! Simply switching it off and then immediately back on again using the switch on the side of the monitor restores normal performance!
